Biblical Stewardship Principles

When it comes to your giving and our asking at Doe River Gorge, here are some thoughts on a biblical perspective that we try to follow.

1. God owns it all (1 Chr. 29:14)
God has provided us with all of our time, wealth, possessions, and resources. God owns everything. The use of these resources are His gifts to us, which God will use to accomplish wonderful things for His kingdom.

2. We are to manage God's resources (1 Peter 4:10)
Since God owns everything, Christians are called to be managers or stewards of all that God entrusts to them, to honor and glorify Him.

3. Our giving is to God (Rom. 12:1, Phil. 4:17)
Giving then, is a worshipful, obedient act of returning to God from what He has provided. Your giving should be directed to God and His work, not to an organization. Therefore, giving is a spiritual decision.

4. God is watching our giving (Rom. 14:12, 2 Cor. 5:10, Luke 16)
From God's kingdom view, our giving becomes a tool to further God's work on earth, a test to see how much responsibility we will be given in heaven, and our giving serves as a trademark of our lives as Christians.

5. God is the motivator (1 Chr. 29:9, 2 Cor. 9:7)
When needs are shared, the response is from the heart. God is the only one who stirs hearts and moves spirits.

6. What is the role of Doe River Gorge Ministries? (1 Chr. 29:9, Ex.35:21, 2 Cor. 8-9)
Examples of David, Moses, and Paul suggest that Doe River Gorge's responsibility is to share the need, provide opportunities for stewards to respond, and allow God the opportunity to stir hearts and move spirits.

7. The purpose of Doe River Gorge in ministry partnership
From a biblical perspective then, when Doe River Gorge asks you to give, our greater purpose is for your accountability to God. Our primary concern is to provide opportunities for you to lay up (send ahead) treasures in heaven (Matt. 6:19-21), and a secondary motive is to have you further God's work by giving to Doe River Gorge.

As a result of honoring God with a biblical approach to our giving and asking practices, we believe that He will supply all our needs (Phil. 4:19). In addition, we believe that as we honor God in doing things His way and relying on God changing hearts, the resulting joy-filled generosity will fully fund God's work (Ex. 36:6-7).

We would encourage you to consider how your generous giving to Doe River Gorge can become a joy for you as you honor God.

Why We Should Give

"The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it." Psalms 24:1

Most people think that they should give to simply do good for mankind (philanthropy). This is a popular, cultural idea used to raise money throughout the world and even among some Christian organizations. Biblical stewardship stems from the understanding that God is the owner of all that we have, and we are managers of God's resources. He has chosen to give us things to use for His glory. While "doing good for mankind" (philanthropy) focuses on the individual who is giving, biblical stewardship focuses on the ownership of God and our obedience to Him.
