All of us remember a time that changed the trajectory of our lives. These moments will forever be etched in our minds as distinctive bulwarks that dictate our future. For Heather Feavel-Schrock, this moment happened while spending her summer at Doe River Gorge.
During the summer of 1997, Heather trekked upon a journey she'll never forget. Enjoy this beautiful story of change, intrigue, and the discovery of grace in Heather's own words. Christ made all the difference by changing Heather from the inside out.
HEATHER'S STORY:
I was saved at the age of five, but grew up in an abusive home. When I was in college, I came to The Gorge to be part of the Summer Staff. I had never experienced Christian grace, but during my summer at Doe River Gorge, I experienced, for the first time, what it was like to be known and accepted for who I was, not what I had done.
I have many fond memories of the impromptu counselor prayer meetings held on the concrete steps leading up to the lake area. We saw God answer many prayers because of those meetings. My relationship with God became real and tangible.
God was beginning to do a great thing in my life. I no longer saw people as an occupational hazard. Instead of living in isolation and suspicion, I was willing to trust those around me.
This was revolutionary, really. I saw a grace-filled God, not a punishment-based God.
I finally understood what it meant to be justified before God. I could finally get off the treadmill of performance and realize that it was Jesus who had finished that work in me!
For Heather, safety and trust came as she understood the truths of grace. As she finished a summer at Doe River Gorge, her idols of performance and suspicion were a thing of the past.
Many people just like Heather have experienced God's grace for the first time at Doe River Gorge in the last 25 years. He is willing to show that grace to all who call upon Him, and there are thousands of teenagers who need to experience God's grace in a real way.
That is why we need your help to continue the work that God has placed before us. Would you partner with us through a gift to our ministry? Your contribution is valuable and essential in cultivating in students a passion to intimately know God. Thank you so much!
